Belinda Sykes & JOGLARESA

On Yoolis Night For Christmas 2011 Joglaresa presents a programme of Christmas music from the 12th to the 15th century. They will perform music such as medieval instrumental dances to Middle English lullabies using historical instruments - harps, vielles, voices and bells. Carols have been sung in Europe for thousands of years. Originally of pagan origin, they would have been sung around stone circles to celebrate solstices. The carol as we know it flourished in the English 15th century, which was when the word carol began to be used in the way we use it now. Both polyphonic as well as monophonic carols were composed and preserved in manuscripts, though usually without attribution to any particular composer. Directed by Belinda Sykes, this London-based British/Irish ensemble has been playing since 1992. Now well-established, they imaginatively push, and often transcend, the limits of what is often thought of as early music. Their work focuses on connecting ancient and traditional musics but, rather than create a 'fusion' or a surreal mix of these styles, they aim to use their combined experiences (upbringings drenched in traditional Irish, English, Maghrebi and Middle Eastern music) to create a homogenous sound.
